Diamond Ring Setting

by Eli Butbul

The ring setting is how the diamonds are held together in the ring. Deciding on the ring setting you would like is a very important decision, as it changes the entire look of the ring. There are many ring settings to choose from and you should be informed of what they are before you make your final decisions.

Bar Setting:Two thick metal strips hold the stone in place, one on each side of the stone. The bar setting is similar to the channel setting however only involves one stone.

Bezel Setting:Has a metal rim that encircles the sides of a stone and extends slightly above it. The metal surrounds the outside perimeter of the stone. The setting holds the stone securely, a good choice for people with active lifestyles.

Channel Setting:Two strips of metal hold the stone in place creating a channel for the stone. There is no metal between the stones.

Flush Setting:The entire stone is sunk into the metal of the ring, so that only the top of the stone can be seen. This provides excellent protection of the stone but limits the stones brilliance.

Pave Setting:This setting involves clustering many small stones together to create a distinct pattern and not allowing any metal to show.

Prong Setting:The metal claws lift the stone into the air, allowing each facet to catch the maximum amount of light possible. To create the setting, the stone is inserted into three or more metal prongs that form a basket-like based,. very popular for solitaire rings.

Tiffany Setting:A high six-prong solitaire setting usually used for very large diamonds. It was introduced by Tiffany & Co. in 1886.
